Hair Therapy

Kate and I are having hair issues...totally different, yet of equal importance.

Kate-
Kate's hair is finally starting to grow. Each section of her hair is in a race to grow the fastest and let me tell you, it's no where near a tie. The back section, unfortunately, seems to be winning, with the sides in a close second, and the top and front are battling it out for last. Add those results up and you end up with one gnarly looking mullet.
Now, through my 'mommy eyes', she's absolutely adorable no matter what. And I'm trying not to cut it because the ultimate goal is for it to grow longer, even if it is at an uneven rate.
M to the Izza, on the other hand, keeps insisting that we get it "trimmed" or "shaped". Shaped?! When has he EVER used the word 'shaped' when talking about hair? Get your manhood in check buddy. I try to explain to him that it would defeat the purpose. But really, I'm new to the whole parent thing and don't know if I should get it trimmed or not. Or maybe just a little to even it up a bit? I really don't want to, but it is rather crazy looking. What's a mama to do?

Me -
Why is it that my hair seems to be falling out in large amounts every time I wash and dry it?! Seriously ya'll, when I go to rinse it or blow dry it, I could probably French braid the amount that comes out. Okay I exaggerated a bit, but it IS a lot. Plus, I have no idea how to French braid. I mean, I realize it's normal for you to shed some strands, but dang. I know I can't be the only one whose hair does this. Actually I know I'm not, because growing up my sisters would always leave beautiful 'hairscapes' plastered to the walls of our shower. (Picture breathtaking mountainous landscapes made with long strands of hair.) So maybe it runs in the fam. BUT, I really think that my hair falls out more than most. If I try hard to pinpoint when it started, I'd say it was after I had Kate. So maybe it's a hormone thing. But whatever the reason, it's getting on my nerves, and my feet, and the bottom of my socks. For instance, after blow drying it, my bathroom floor seems to have acquired a beautiful shag rug...great for decor, not so great for when Kate drops her bouncy ball and picks it up looking like Headless Hattie.
I've heard of different vitamins and supplements that help with this but were wondering if they really work. At this rate, I'll be bald by Christmas. I guess I should polish up on my Sinead O'Connor lyrics.

don't worry about sweet kate's hair. :)

your hair is gorgeous. maybe it's the weather change. a lot of my hair is coming out when i'm drying or washing, but it's SO thick. i just have to get rid of some of it. yours is probably the same way.

"Nothin compares to youuuuuuuu" Go Sinead!!

Kinley has a wicked mullet too. I just pull the top and sides up into a "Pebbles" ponytail with one of those teensy clear rubber bands that she can't pull out of her hair. Clip a bow in it, and it usually stays.

I posted some new craft pictures!!

It is totally normal to lose hair after you have a baby!! I thought I was going to go bald, but it finally stopped a couple months later. I remember calling my Mom frantic as I thought something was wrong with me =).

If you trim her hair it will grow faster; but I know what you mean...I always cringe when I take Claire in and she is almost 5!!!

I lose a TON of hair too and I haven't had any children yet... I hope it doesn't get worse AHHH! That is scary because as of right now the amount of hair I lose I could make a hair piece for probably every bald man in America.

I think my sister started losing some hair after her baby. I'm sure it's hormonal... Darn those hormones!

Thanks for you nice comment tonight - I really appreciate it.

Loosing hair after having a baby is normal. Your body changes so much it's insane!
I have 2 boys, so I have no idea about girl hair.

I still stick my hair to the shower wall.

I just wish I still lived at home for my mom to clean it out.

hair stuck to the shower wall totally creeps me out!

Kate's hair will grow out. Your hair I wouldn't worry about. It could be stress. I lose so much hair every morning. Mr. Guru says I cover his sink in blonde hair. I have started taking a daily vitamin which seems to help my hair grow but no so much the falling out.

LOVE your blog! Don't worry about your little girls hair, but I feel ya, My oldest has gone through the mullet stage as well, she's 2 1/2 and still has not had a hair cut yet...and her hair sure isn't long!

The shedding thing happens after kids, but if it still concerns you get a blood test to make sure thyroid levels are good, and talk to your hair dresser about it to see if she notices anything.

The lady who does my hair told me that shedding comes in cycles...I'm sure that the post-baby hormones aren't helping, but I bet it'll be back to normal in a few months. Sometimes I don't shed at all and other times it's nuts!

Whoa...Lauren's hair is doing the same thing as Kate's...only hers seems to be thise little patch right on the crown of her head - growing towards the front so I know what you are going thru. My son had alot of hair at birth that slowly fell out and he had this strange look going on too... everyone said to cut it and I refused. Looking back, I probably should have cut it, but... i told my mom i was going to cut Laurens and she said no way! So, I decided against it. I suppose it was alright for the boy, but not the girl....

For your hair, the only time I remember mine falling out so much was WHEN I first found out I was pregnant (I guess to make room for the 'new' hair) and then after I had the baby...

Sorry I've been a horrible commenter lately! I have no idea what to do about Kate's hair, but I've heard that your hair has "seasons" and that it falls out...could be hormones, but I tend to get handfuls every time I shower and I'm still not bald, although I do have LOTS of new hair right now that sticks up EVERYWHERE!!!

I am always freaking out about how much hair I lose! I do not know how I have ANY left in my head!

Well, glad to see we're not alone....I too loose TONS of hair - it seems the more I do to it - curl it or let the wind blow through it alot, the more hair falls out with the next shampooing! I forgot how many hairs it says a woman looses every day on average - it was shocking to me - its alot!

I too put my hair on the side of the shower wall until I get out so it doesnt go down the drain...funny!

Don't worry about sweet Kate's hair. At least she has some! I was bald till I was 2! My parents didn't know what was wrong with me. I had all kinds of tests and everything done, it just took a long time for it to grow. I looked like a little boy well up until I was at least 6 years old. Man I will have to post some pictures sometime. It's quite amusing!

As far as your hair loss. I believe it is normal. I loose a ton of hair too and my hair is no where near thinning. I have to sweep all the hair up just about everyday or it begins to look like we have carpet in the bathroom! I'm like Amy though and I see a ton of new growth underneath. I get those nice what I like to call 'little spiders' that stick out and just make your do look ever so nice... like I've touched a light socket!

My baby's 3 years old and I'm still losing hair! I asked the dr. about it and she wasn't too concerned since I wasn't going bald or anything.

I found your blog on Putting on the Grits and I'm loving it!

Seriously. I put my hair on the shower wall too. And my husband is so awesome that he usually takes it off. The hair-scape thing cracked me up.

My hair seems to fall out a lot too - I have NO clue what to do for it and have yet to meet anyone else with real answers in order to keep my thinning hair on my head. YOu and me might have to do some wig shopping together.

I would just put a couple bows in Kate's hair to distract from how it's growing. Either way, she's darling and it will get it's "shape" soon enough.

I am right there with you!!! I know you do lose your hair after childbirth, but Jeez...this is a bit much!!! If you get an answer that works...spread the love!!!

This is just craziness that you posted about this.. I have the very same problem... My hormones may be out of whack but not due to kiddos.. My hair falls out in WADS! I finally told Dust that we needed to get the hair filter drains b/c I can see our drains clogging up quickly in the new house b/c of my hair falling out.. It is so weird. I have always shed, but I'm worse than a cat headed into summer.. If you figure out the cure, please pass along! I have very thick hair, but I prefer to keep it that way! :)

I tell Hubby I'm not sure how I still have hair on my head, I lose so much too! Hairscapes, hilarious! Definitely happened more after the babe. And I agree with Rachel, if you trim or cut hair supposedly it grows faster! You know like pruning plants, get the dead stuff off and then voila, it grows :) Your posts always crack me up, and your hair is gorgeous anyway!

1. Don't cut the baby's hair. It'll even out.
2. When you figure out what's up with your hair, let me know. Mine's been falling out by the bucket load since baby #3...9 months ago.

I guess I can expect to be bald after I have my first child, because I already lose a lot of hair, and I have never been pregnant!

My hair has always fallen out like that, it's so odd!

My hair falls out, too. It makes me crazy! I try not to be too rough with it but it still come out. I think it is largely due to my bleached highlights. But I do so love the blonde so I deal!

We had the same problem with our Diva's hair.. and we gave it a trim (as suggested by hair dresser friend) and it really helped! The more we trim it, the faster it all seems to catch up... weird but true!

My hair goes in spurts. I will go through months when I lose a lot.. its usually when i am most stressed... good luck and regardless, you are both beautiful!!!!!!!!

put a little pony tail in your beautiful princess's hair. and stress can make your hair fall out. i don't know if your stressed, but i've had that problem before. your hair looks beautiful to me, but i know it freaks you out to lose so much hair.

I'm experiencing the same "issues" with my hair! I blame it on hormones. Actually, I seem to blame EVERYTHING on hormones these days! Good luck!

Hollie-
Do you have any experience with "The Grocery Game"? I thought I saw you are a bargain hunter, curious if you have had any dealings with them.
Thanks,
Jay
